Israel: 2 soldiers dead in Hezbollah attack
The Lebanese Hezbollah group claimed responsibility for firing a missile that targeted an Israeli military convoy on Wednesday, an attack that prompted Israel to fire at least 50 artillery shells into Lebanon. (Jan. 28) APSmoke from Israeli shelling covers the Lebanese town of Al-Majidiyah on Jan. 28.(Photo: Ali Dia, AFP/Getty Images)The Israeli military said Wednesday that two of its soldiers were killed and another seven injured in a Hezbollah attack on a military convoy near the border with Lebanon.Hezbollah, a militant Islamist group headquartered in Lebanon, said the attack was carried out by the "heroic martyrs of Quneitra" — apparently a reference to and retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on the Golan Heights on Jan. 18 that killed six-Hezbollah fighters and an Iranian general.The attack took place near Shebaa Farms, an area where the borders of Israel, Lebanon and Syria meet. The Israeli military responded to the strike with aerial and ground attacks on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, where a Spanish U.N. peacekeeper was killed in the flare-up.Subsequent reports of Israeli soldiers being abducted during the Hezbollah attack were being investigated by Israel Defense Forces.It was not immediately clear if the attack heralded a significant escalation of cross-border violence or was an isolated incident."At this moment the IDF responds to events in the North. We will not allow terrorists to disrupt the lives of our citizens and threaten their security.
